VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL
The Roots
The origins of this celebrated trail can be traced back to 1886 when construction began on the Virginia-Carolina Railroad. Built to haul lumber and iron ore through the rugged Appalachian terrain, the rail line would eventually stretch 115 miles from Abingdon, VA to Todd, NC.
For over 80 years, the steam locomotives labored up and down this mountainous route, creeping along at just 10-15 mph due to the steep grades. This painstaking pace earned the trains the nickname “Creepers” among locals and inspired the trail’s unique name after the railroad was abandoned in 1977.

The Virginia Creeper Trail officially opened in 1987, cementing its status as an outdoor jewel of the Appalachian region.
